MISSION STATEMENT

Texas Tech University provides information, support, and opportunities concerning Service Learning to students, faculty, and community members, fostering an appreciation of the academic and social values of community engagement.

 

VISION STATEMENT

Texas Tech University will be a national leader in Service Learning, providing a rigorous and reflective academic experiences for students, excellent resources and recognition for faculty and meaningful service to the community.

INVEST IN THE PEOPLE OF TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY

Goal 1-Access and Diversity Utilize Service Learning as a pedagogy to recruit, retain, and graduate civically and academically engaged students.

Benchmark
Increase the number of students enrolled in Service Learning course by 1%-2% per year for the next five years.

Objective 1.1 Utilize Service Learning to enhance recruitment

Strategies:

  • Develop presentations for recruiters and displays for regional offices
  • Encourage Service Learning projects that target Title One and House Bill 400 schools
  • Explore Service Learning collaborations with the community and TTU outreach programs

Objective 1.2 Create opportunities to integrate civic and academic responsibilities through Service Learning.

Strategies:

  • Publicize Service Learning at Red Raider Camps, in IS 1100 courses, in the Honors College’s First Year Experience program, at University Day, and New Student Orientation
  • Present philosophy of Service Learning to student and faculty groups
  • Develop workshops for undergraduate advisors
  • Include definition and explanation of Service Learning in course catalog
  • Provide link to Service Learning website on university website

 

Goal 2-Human Resources and Infrastructure: Maintain and develop a quality work force and environment for Service Learning.

  • Maintain an appropriate administrative unit for Service Learning

ENRICH THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Goal 3-Undergraduate Teaching and Learning: Provide instruction in Service Learning in a wide array of disciplines, departments, and college undergraduate programs.

Benchmarks:

  • Increase the number of faculty teaching Service Learning courses by 1%-2% per year for the next five years
  • Increase the number of “S” Designated courses by 1%-2% per year for the next five years

Objective 3.1 Attract additional faculty to teach Service Learning courses

Strategies:

  • Present Service Learning workshops in a variety of academic environments
  • Promote Service Learning at college and departmental levels
  • Develop Service Learning workshops for new faculty orientation
  • Include Service Learning information in new faculty orientation materials

Objective 3.2 Support faculty teaching Service Learning courses

Strategies:          

  • Provide information about the Service Learning Faculty Fellow program
  • Recognize exceptional faculty teaching Service Learning courses
  • Institutionalize course load credit for developing and teaching Service Learning courses through faculty workload policy
  • Develop appropriate assessment models for evaluating Service Learning
  • Develop workshops on Service Learning
  • Expand the Service Learning Faculty Fellows Program
  • Create and publish a Service Learning newsletter

 

Goal 4-Graduate and Professional Education: Increase graduate and professional education opportunities in Service Learning. 

Benchmarks:

  • Increase the number of graduate faculty teaching Service Learning courses by 1% each year for the next five years
  • Increase the number of “S” Designated graduate  courses by 1% each year for the next five years

Objective 4.1 Attract additional graduate faculty to teach Service Learning courses

Strategies:

  • Present Service Learning workshops in a variety of academic environments
  • Promote Service Learning at college and departmental levels
  • Develop orientation material for Service Learning workshops
  • Include Service Learning information in new faculty orientation materials

Goal 5: Engagement: Develop a Service Learning program that contributes to student learning and benefits our university, community, state, and nation.

  • Achieve state/national recognition for community engagement through Service Learning on the TTU campus

Objective 5.1 Showcase faculty research on Service Learning

Strategies:

  • Continue to implement campus events to display faculty achievements in Service Learning
  • Develop website links to highlight Service Learning scholarship
  • Provide consultation for faculty in regards to the implementation and coordination of Service Learning program within their courses.

  • Encourage media coverage of Service Learning projects
  • Develop website links to highlight university, community, state, and national partnerships in Service Learning

ADVANCE RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ENDEAVORS

Goal 6-Research Productivity: Increase research productivity and funding for all areas of Service Learning

Benchmarks

  • Increase conference presentations emphasizing Service Learning at Texas Tech by 1%-2% per year for the next five years
  • Increase scholarly publications emphasizing Service Learning at Texas Tech by 1%-2% per year for the next five years.
  • Increase external funding to support Service Learning scholarship

Objective 6.1 Pursue grant funding to support Service Learning scholarship

Strategies:

  • Submit internal and external grant proposals to local, regional, and national agencies supporting Service Learning

Objective 6.2 Develop a forum in which to showcase the talents and service of Texas Tech faculty and students engaged in Service Learning scholarship

  • Develop website links to highlight faculty and student Service Learning scholarship

STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIPS

Goal 7- Partnerships: Build strategic Service Learning partnerships with community, government, business, industry, and schools (EC-12, community colleges, and universities).

Benchmarks:

  • Increase number of community partnerships by 1%-2% per year for the next five years
  • Continue to create and maintain affiliations with regional and national Service Learning organizations

Objective 7.1: Create and maintain partnerships with local and regional EC-12 schools and higher education institutions

Strategies:

  • Develop partnerships with key individuals in local and regional school districts as well as other higher education institutions
  • Identify  EC-12 needs that can be met through Service Learning courses
  • Include EC-12 representative on Service Learning Advisory Council

Objective 7.2: Create partnerships with university, community, state, national, non-profit and human interest agencies.

Strategies:

  • Identify community needs that can be met through TTU Service Learning courses
  • Explore possible collaborations with national agencies
  • Explore possible collaborations within the Texas Tech University system
