Meaney introduces Kirk St Amant as the Service Learning spotlight. Kirk presented several different service learning projects he developed for his class encompassing technical communications. Kirk discussed both positive and negative processes and outcomes associated with his service learning efforts. In addition, Kirk talked about how the negatives could be minimized. Immediately following Kirk’s presentation Meaney asks for the approval of the February 27 minutes; minutes were approved.
Arellano provided the council members with service learning updates and announcements which included three service learning workshops scheduled for the month of April. Caswell updated the council on the progress of the sub-committee charged with revising the service learning strategic plan. The goal of the sub-committee is to distribute a draft of the document at the next SLAC meeting.
Meaney presented the draft document of the QEP-Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) for Service Learning courses. Considerable discussion among the council followed. Specific questions were: 1) the wording of the SLO, 2) the inference that faculty would be responsible for “ethical issues in personal, professional and civic life”, 3) the reflection component limited to written form, and 4) specifics regarding the number of work samples to collect and the type of summary requested. Meaney stated that they (Meaney and Arellano) would discuss these concerns with the QEP sub-committee and invite a QEP sub-committee member to the next SLAC meeting.
