Emerging Technologies III: Social Networking and Other Communication Tools

If you plan to attend the Emerging Technologies session this afternoon (3/11), let us know what you're interests you!  The title of the session was purposely vague to allow for a discussion of any topics of interest to the audience.  Some ideas for topics to cover:

    • RSS feeds and readers
    • Social Bookmarks
    • Facebook (and other social networking sites)
    • Podcasting
    • Forums/Discussion boards
    • Netiquette (or Network Etiquette)
    • Wikis & Blogs (covered in earlier sessions, but we can certainly discuss them further)

Please let us know which of these (or any other) topics interest you!  Just click the "Reply" button above this post.

    Steve,

I think the first four sound the most interesting. If I had to pick a fifth I would say Second Life or similar virtual worlds.

    Thanks,

    Brian

Re: Emerging Technologies III: Social Networking and Other Communication Tools

I am a reference librarian and our emphasis this semester has been on outreach to our patrons. We try to reach out to the students in their "turf", we try to reach them in their comfort zone, their space and what other way than to use social networking and other communication tools that they are familiar with - facebook, IM's and podcasting for students. Wikis, blogs, RSSfeeds, forums/discussion boards for faculty and other like minded professionals. The library is huge and seemingly complex so we try to make it user friendly by appealing to our patrons using what they use to "push" information access and use to them.

Ethics is central in all we do and more in the electronic world where physical contact is minimized, there is need to know how to communicate that will not turn away others, or communicate in a mutually respectful and beneficial manner hence netiquette is important.

I look forward to an interesting session this afternoon.

    Thanks,

    Innocent

     I am especially interested in

  • Facebook (and other social networking sites)
  • Podcasting
  • Forums/Discussion boards
  • Facebook is a new teaching tool. It is interesting that you are not able to pull the students into class (real classroom), but they are more available and willing to participate if the session is online. I have been offered by students that we should have a high-tech version of gathering in case studies. I want to know more about how to do this... Thanks for the opportunity.

    Steve,

All of these topics are of interest to me, but i am particularly interested in

Social Bookmarks - what they are and their uses

Facebook - how they are being used in academia and what are the newest ones out there

Forums/Discussion boards -  what is out there and what is the newest twists to them.

I am also interested in hearing the latest thoughts on Netiquette

    thanks

    Pelin,

I think you'll find the most recent Emerging Technology blog post kind of interesting.  It gives an example of how students today may use Facebook as a tool for studying.  You can find it at the following link:
