I am a reference librarian and our emphasis this semester has been on outreach to our patrons. We try to reach out to the students in their "turf", we try to reach them in their comfort zone, their space and what other way than to use social networking and other communication tools that they are familiar with - facebook, IM's and podcasting for students. Wikis, blogs, RSSfeeds, forums/discussion boards for faculty and other like minded professionals. The library is huge and seemingly complex so we try to make it user friendly by appealing to our patrons using what they use to "push" information access and use to them.
Ethics is central in all we do and more in the electronic world where physical contact is minimized, there is need to know how to communicate that will not turn away others, or communicate in a mutually respectful and beneficial manner hence netiquette is important.
I look forward to an interesting session this afternoon.
Thanks,
Innocent
