MISSION STATEMENT
The Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center provides instructional development opportunities, pursues continuous quality improvement, stimulates the greatest degree of meaningful research related to instructional development, develops and applies appropriate technology to teaching, and supports faculty and other instructional staff.

VISION STATEMENT
Because effective teaching leads to enhanced learning, which is central to the mission of the University, the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center will:

  • foster a culture of teaching and learning at Texas Tech University; and
  • provide the highest standard of excellence in faculty and instructional development.

The Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center is committed to the values of:

Goal 1. Access and Diversity: Contribute to the retention of students and the diversity of the University.
Critical Success Factors (measures of the degree of success over the next 5 years):

  • Annually sponsor or co-sponsor 2 activities related to teaching and learning concerns of diverse faculty and TAs.
  • Offer 2 short courses per year on ADA-compliant technologies.

Objectives:
Objective 1.1: Provide programming related to ADA technology guidelines.
Strategy:

  • Participate in the development of ADA technology guidelines.

Assessment:

  • Number of ADA technology guideline related courses and workshops offered.

Objective 1.2: Assist faculty and TAs of diverse backgrounds with understanding TTU teaching expectations and techniques.
Strategies:

  • Participate in International TA training.
  • Participate in new faculty orientation.
  • Develop and sponsor seminars and workshops appropriate to diverse faculty populations.

Assessments:

  • Number of participants in Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center events.
  • Number of events in which the Center participates.
  • Number of seminars/workshops offered/sponsored.

Objective 1.3: Assist the faculty, staff and administration with efforts to improve the retention of students.
Strategies:

  • Collaborate in and support programs addressing student retention.
  • Provide faculty, staff, and administration with educational opportunities that address student retention.

Assessments:

  • Number of courses or programs supported.
  • Number of students impacted by supported programs.
  • Number of seminars/workshops offered.

Goal 2. Academic Excellence: Assist the faculty, teaching assistants, and instructional staff in acquiring and/or enhancing knowledge, skills, and techniques for improving student learning.
Critical Success Factors (measures of the degree of success over the next 5 years):

  • Increase number of users of Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center services and participants in programs by 20%.
  • Increase utilization of Center facilities by 20%.
  • Increase number of requested individual class evaluations by 20%.
  • Participate in 2 research collaborations annually.

Objectives:
Objective 2.1: Provide faculty and teaching assistants with professional development opportunities related to the overall improvement of teaching and learning.
Strategies:

  • Offer courses, workshops and seminars focused on teaching and learning.
  • Work with faculty, at their request, to focus upon improvement in individual classes.
  • Work with units on faculty development projects.

Assessments:

  • Number of courses, workshops, and seminars offered.
  • Number of classes with which the Center assists in the improvement of teaching and learning.
  • Number of participants in teaching and learning improvement activities.

Objective 2.2: Assist teaching assistants in preparing for a career in academia.
Strategies:

  • Continue to offer the Teaching Effectiveness And Career enhancement (TEACH) program.
  • Expand TA access to Center programs and facilities.
  • Offer guest lectures, at the invitation of instructors, in courses preparing future teachers.

Assessments:

  • Number of TAs in TEACH program.
  • Satisfaction ratings from TAs in TEACH program.
  • Number of TAs in other Center programs.
  • Number of guest lectures delivered.

Objective 2.3: Design and disseminate materials that enhance teaching and learning at Texas Tech.
Strategies:

  • Maintain and enhance Center web site.
  • Expand Center library.
  • Develop web sites specifically for Center taught courses/workshops.

Assessments:

  • Number of web site hits.
  • Number of library holdings.
  • Number of Center course specific web sites.

Objective 2.4: Support research and scholarship related to student success as well as teaching and learning.
Strategies:

  • Participate in research collaborations related to technology as a teaching and learning tool.
  • Participate in research collaborations related to teaching and learning.
  • Retain/enlarge Faculty Incentive Grant program.

Assessments:

  • Number of research collaborations per year.
  • Number of publications/presentations related to research collaborations.
  • Number and amount of grants awarded.
     

Goal 3. Engagement: Build community connections that enhance the quality of life for students and the community.
Critical Success Factors (measures of the degree of success over the next 5 years):

  • Participate in at least 1 University community-based technology or instructional development activity per year.
  • Sponsor at least 1 activity per year related to the integration of service-learning into instruction.
  • Participate in 1 Lubbock community board/organization related to the Center’s mission.

Objectives:
Objective 3.1: Offer need-based community programming on instructional development.
Strategy:

  • Participate in community teaching, learning, and technology organizations.

Assessment:

  • Number of organizations with which the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center is involved.

Objective 3.2: Provide appropriate materials to support workshops, other sponsored activities, and general campus outreach.
Strategies:

  • Participate in relevant campus committees and organizations.
  • Support outreach efforts of colleges and Extended Studies.

Assessment:

  • Number of committees and organizations in which the Center participates.

Goal 4. Technology: Promote the integration of technology into instruction.
Critical Success Factors (measures of the degree of success over the next 5 years):

  • Increase faculty activity on Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center servers by 20%.
  • Increase student activity on Center course servers by 30%.

Objectives:
Objective 4.1: Assist faculty with development and delivery of courses using instructional technology.
Strategies:

  • Identify, evaluate, and disseminate technologies that enhance learning.
  • Provide instructional technology consultations for faculty, course developers, and instructional staff.
  • Train faculty in the preparation and dissemination of distance learning course materials.

Assessments:

  • Number of consultations.
  • Number of training opportunities.
  • Number of participants in technology short courses.

Objective 4.2: Serve as a faculty support service for instructional technology.
Strategies:

  • House and support general faculty electronic course materials and student/teacher communication software.
  • Identify, evaluate, and disseminate technologies that enhance learning.
  • Provide faculty with equipment for check-out for instructional purposes.
  • Explore cooperative ventures with individual college and departmental instructional technology support services.

Assessments:

  • Number of courses housed and supported.
  • Traffic using supported course materials.
  • Number of faculty developing courses using instructional technology.
  • Number of faculty teaching with instructional technology.
  • Amount of equipment checked out.

Objective 4.3: Provide faculty and teaching assistants with professional development opportunities related to the incorporation of        technology into the instructional process to enhance teaching and learning.
Strategies:

  • Sponsor relevant teleconferences.
  • Assist and support faculty technology user groups.
  • Offer seminar events for the TTU System and external faculty presenters/facilitators.

Assessments:

  • Number of teleconferences.
  • Number of supported group events.
  • Number of seminar events.

Objective 4.4: Assist the faculty in increasing student awareness of and competency with technology-based instruction.
Strategies:

  • Assist student help groups and programs.
  • Provide online user tutorials for supported general instructional software.

Assessments:

  • Number of interactions with student help groups/programs.
  • Number of on-line user tutorials.
  • Number of students impacted.

Goal 5. Partnerships: Build strategic partnerships and alliances.
Critical Success Factors (measures of the degree of success over the next 5 years):

  • Double partnerships with TTU System entities or programs.

Objectives:
Objective 5.1: Establish and maintain formal and informal linkages with related programs in universities, business, or agencies.
Strategies:

  • Provide faculty access to relevant national organization materials.
  • Participate in Texas-based teaching and learning organizations and their activities.
  • Establish partnerships with other TTU System divisions.

Assessments:

  • Number of non-system partnerships.
  • Number of system programs developed.

Objective 5.2: Partner with academic programs to assist in the enhancement of teaching and learning and recognition of excellence in teaching.
Strategies:

Support the work of the Teaching Academy.

  • Work with University academic departments and programs to promote and establish partnerships.

  • Continued support of Teaching Academy.
  • Number of departments with which the Center works.

Goal 6. Human Resources: Maintain a quality workforce and work environment.
Critical Success Factors (measures of the degree of success over the next 5 years):

  • Increase average staff participation by at least 1 additional professional development activity per year.
  • Adequate staff to implement strategic plan.
  • Salaries competitive with peer institutions/programs.

Objectives:
Objective 6.1: Recruit and retain qualified staff.
Strategies:

  • Provide competitive salaries.
  • Reward outstanding performance.
  • Create/maintain a pleasant work environment.
  • Conduct staff satisfaction surveys for purposes of retention.

  • Number of staff.
  • Retention rate.
  • Staff satisfaction ratings.

Objective 6.2: Develop the knowledge, skills, abilities and outreach of the Center staff on a continuous basis.
Strategies:

  • Facilitate, support, and fund staff participation in professional development opportunities.
  • Take advantage of University professional development programs.

  • Annual amount of Center support for staff professional development.
  • Number of professional development programs in which staff members participate.

Goal 7. Tradition and Pride: Contribute to the national image of TTU through the work of the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center.

  • Staff participation in appropriate professional associations at the state, regional, or national levels.
  • Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center recognized as a national leader.

Objectives:
Objective 7.1: Promote and support staff participation and presentations in national or regional professional associations as well as scholarly publication.
Strategies:

  • Support memberships in national and regional professional organizations.
  • Support participation in national and regional meetings.
  • Support staff publication efforts.
  • Attain office in state, regional or national organizations.

Assessments:

  • Number of memberships held.
  • Number of meetings attended.
  • Number of publications.

Objective 7.2: Attain recognition for work of the Center.
Strategies:

  • Promote national image by publication and presentation at national and regional events.
  • Develop regularly published faculty newsletter to enhance TTU image of the Center.

  • Number of publications and presentations.
  • Regularity of internal newsletter.

Goal 8. Financial Stability: Strengthen financial resources.
Critical Success Factors (measures of the degree of success over the next 5 years):

  • Match between Center’s budget and demand for its services.
  • Increase in Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center Fund for Excellence.

Objectives:
Objective 8.1: Assure that adequate funding and staffing are available to support the work of the Center.
Strategies:

  • Advisory Board used to identify needed and unneeded services and programs.
  • Base funding requests upon usage data and need for new programs.
  • Develop rolling 2-year business plan.
  • Work with Development Office to increase Fund for Excellence.

Assessments:

  • Match between 2-year business plan and funding levels.
  • Fund for Excellence growth.

Goal 9. Accountability: Enhance planning, performance, and assessment of Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center services and programs.

  • Compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Assessment program.

Objectives:
Objective 9.1: Evaluate and assure the quality and efficiency of the services and programming provided by the Center.
Strategies:

  • Regularly review Center services.
  • Regularly review the efficiency of the Center’s operations.
  • Regularly survey Center clientele and review their satisfaction and accomplishments as a result of participating in Center programming and services.

  • Client survey results.
