Scholarly Inquiry about Active Pedagogies

Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) is a major higher education program launched by The Carnegie Foundation in 1998. It is based on a concept of teaching as scholarly work and aims to support development of a scholarship of teaching and learning that would significantly improve the learning process and enhance teaching as a profession.

The CASTL Campus Program brings together educational institutions that are ready to commit to fostering the scholarship of teaching and learning and are committed to coordinating design, documentation, and dissemination of their work in this area. According to The Carnegie Foundation website, more than 200 institutions of higher education have been working actively to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning since 2002.

In 2003, the campuses supporting the scholarship of teaching and learning began to coordinate their collaboration through the network of twelve leadership clusters, organized around a variety of themes, functions, and interests. Each cluster’s members work on a single teaching and learning scholarship research topic and meet each year at the CASTL Colloquium and the American Association of Higher Education (AAHE) Summer Academy.

The Scholarly Inquiry about Active Pedagogies cluster brings together the faculty members of Clayton State University, Florida Atlantic University, Indiana State University, Texas Tech University, and University of Massachusetts - Lowell committed to the scholarship of teaching and learning.
