Blackboard QuickStart Guide

Step 1: Request Course Creation

DEVELOPMENT VS. LIVE

DEVELOP a new course:

Request the LIVE course section shell:

All new courses start with a DEVELOPMENT phase. At the time of creation, the development course has a standardized Course Design Template applied, which automatically adds many important student and instructor resource links to the course. This template assists with the quality of new courses being developed at Texas Tech, and accounts for the basic Principles of Good Practice standards for online education course design.

Another aspect of the development course to be aware of is that students will not have access to courses in this phase.

To request the creation of a DEVELOPMENT course, please fill out the Blackboard Development Course Request Form for each course needed.

Each semester, the instructor will be responsible for requesting the creation of the LIVE course section shell for Blackboard. This shell is connected to Banner which allows for the auto-population of students enrolled in the section directly into the Blackboard shell.

The first time the Blackboard shell is accessed, there will be an option to copy the content from your development course into the shell. Click here to see detailed instructions describing how to copy the content into the shell. The copy process takes just a few seconds or minutes depending on the amount of content you have added to your development course.

To request the creation of the LIVE course section shell, please fill out the Blackboard Course Section Shell Request Form, selecting each course that you wish to use Blackboard from the list of courses displayed.
